The freestyle wrestlers ended their performances at the European Championship underway in Bucharest. After a 6-year break the Armenia freestyle wrestling team again has a gold medal: in Bucharest 19-year-old Arsen Harutyunyan became a European champion. In an interview given to the ANOC press office head coach Habetnak Kurghinyan noted that the team could have performed better.
“I’m pleased with the results but the guys could have performed better. For example, Vazgen Tevanyan had an injury.” Kurghinyan is sure that this team is able to win Olympic qualifications in the upcoming World Championship in September which is qualifying: “The European Championship showed that the team is able to win those qualifications. If we can have a champion at the European Senior Championship and struggle for medals we can as well fight for qualifications. We have young wrestlers in the team and enough time to prepare for the championship,” said the head coach.
Gevorg Aleksanyan will join the competition as a judge.
