Final amount of metals for Tokyo 2020 medals collected

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has announced that final amount of necessary metals for 5000 medals of the Olympic and Paralympic Games have been collected.

During two years 32 kg of gold, 3,500 kg of silver and 2,200 kg of bronze have been extracted from mobile phones, computers and other small electronic devices.

6 million old electronics have been used to collect the needed amount. It’s noteworthy that one of athletes will win a medal manufactured of IOC President Thomas Bach’s mobile phone. The last one has donated his phone in support of the environmental initiative.

According to the requirements of the International Olympic Committee, the highest medal should have a silver base and contain at least 6 grams of pure gold.

Earlier it was announced that Tokyo 2020 medal podiums will be made of recycled plastic. For production of 100 such podiums will be needed 100 tones of plastic waste.
