After becoming champion in the 89 kg weight class at the European Weightlifting Championship ongoing in Batumi, Georgia, Hakob Mkrtchyan shared his impressions.

“My dream came true but we won’t stop here. There are still many tournaments ahead and the most important are the Olympic Games. I must move to the 96 kg weight class and also win everybody there. In the Olympic Games I’ll try to perform at 96 kg. The Georgian weightlifter who placed second was equal to me, we competed together and I could win. In the clean and jerk I wanted to fulfill the third attempt and renew the record but the coaches said that there was no need. I’ll try to set a record at the World Championship where I’ll perform in the 96 kg weight class. I dedicate this victory to my father, my dear ones and all Armenians.”- noted the newly crowned champion.

Let us recall that Hakob Mkrtchyan registered a total of 371 kg result (164+207) and set a European record in the combined exercise. In the snatch the 22-year-old weightlifter was the 4th and in the clean and jerk won a small gold medal. European silver medalist Revaz Davitadze registered a total of 370 kg result (170+200).
