Bucharest 2019: In anticipation of 2 medals after the first day

The European Wrestling Championship goes on in Bucharest. On the first day of competition wrestlers of 57, 65, 70, 79 and 97 kg entered the mat.
Armenia had representatives in all 5 weight categories.
At 57 kg Vaghinak Matevosyan started the struggle from the 1/8 finals where conceded 7:0 to Romanian Andrei Dukov. Later in the semifinals Dukov lost to Russia’s Muslim Sadulayev and Vaghinak Matevosyan lost the opportunity to fight for bronze.
At 65 kg U23 European champion Vazgen Tevanyan began from the qualification round gaining advantage 10:0 over Great Britain’s Georgi Ram. In the 1/8 finals Tevanyan’s opponent was Olympic bronze medalist, three-time world champion Azerbaijani Haji Aliev. The Armenian wrestler conceded 0:1 in a tense bout. Haji Aliev reached the finals, so Vazgen Tevanyan has opportunity to fight for the bronze medal. Tomorrow he will start the struggle from the repechage round where he will face Belarusian Husein Shahbanov.
At 70 kg world champion David Safaryan started from the qualification round winning 7:4 Moldova’s Mihail Sava. In the 1/8 finals Safaryan was defeated 2:12 by Azerbaijani Aghahuseyn Mustafaev. The Azerbaijani wrestler reached the finals and David Safaryan got a right to wrestle for bronze. In the repechage round his opponent will be two-time world champion Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov.
At 79 kg Grigor Grigoryan performed from the qualification round and lost 1:1 to Romania’s Omaraskhab Najmudinov. Later the Romanian suffered defeat, too and Grigor lost the chance to compete for bronze.
In the 97kg weight class Sargis Hovsepyan entered the struggle from the 1/8 finals where lost 6:1 to Germany’s Genadi Kudinovich. Afterwards the German wrestler lost to Olympic, three-time world champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev and Sargis missed the chance to fight for the bronze medal.
